{"id":776,"date":"2008-08-15T09:44:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-15T13:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=776"},"modified":"2008-08-15T11:28:21","modified_gmt":"2008-08-15T15:28:21","slug":"the-manchurian-pundit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=776","title":{"rendered":"The Manchurian Pundit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Put <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/15\/opinion\/15brooks.html?ref=opinion\">this<\/a> in the department of specious comparisons.&nbsp; David Brooks seems to be in China, where he personally interviewed some of the survivors of the devastating earthquake that struck Sichuan province.&nbsp; He concludes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p> These were weird, unnerving interviews, and I don&rsquo;t pretend to understand what&rsquo;s going on in the minds of people who have suffered such blows and remained so optimistic. <strong>All I can imagine<\/strong> is that the history of this province has given these people a stripped-down, pragmatic mentality: Move on or go crazy. Don&rsquo;t dwell. Look to the positive. Fix what needs fixing.
