{"id":699,"date":"2008-06-24T08:58:06","date_gmt":"2008-06-24T12:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=699"},"modified":"2008-07-01T21:14:14","modified_gmt":"2008-07-02T01:14:14","slug":"argumentum-ad-titulum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=699","title":{"rendered":"Argumentum ad titulum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#39;s a new fallacy.&nbsp; It&#39;s a specific variation of the straw man.&nbsp; It involves attacking the titles of someone&#39;s work in place of the work itself.&nbsp; George Will&#8211;what would we do without him&#8211;has been working on this one for several years now.&nbsp; Several years ago, before the NonSequitur, I saw him on ABC&#39;s This Week critique a series of New York Times&#39; articles by reading their titles.&nbsp; From what I could gather, he didn&#39;t bother to read the actual article.&nbsp; The very same subject came up again this past Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/06\/20\/AR2008062002276.html\">writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p> Listening to political talk requires a third ear that hears what is <em>not<\/em> said. Today&#39;s near silence about crime probably is evidence of social improvement.
