The premise has been that<br \/>\nthe cure for communism is commerce with the capitalist world. The<br \/>\nassumption is that capitalism brings, because it requires, an ethic of<br \/>\ntrust and the rule of law in the form of promise-keeping (contracts).<br \/>\nAlso, the protection of private property gives individuals a sphere of<br \/>\nsovereignty and whets their appetites for a politics of popular<br \/>\nsovereignty.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThis has been called &quot;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/ac2\/related\/topic\/Starbucks+Corporation?tid=informline\">Starbucks<\/a><br \/>\nfallacy&quot;<\/strong> (see James Mann&#8217;s book &quot;The China Fantasy&quot;): When people<br \/>\nbecome accustomed to many choices of coffee, they will demand many<br \/>\npolitical choices. This doctrine may be being refuted by the emergence<br \/>\nof a China that has become wealthier without becoming less<br \/>\nauthoritarian.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to this self-effacing tidbit, the rest of his op-ed today seemed a model of reasonableness.&nbsp; It&#8217;s not so hard to do, really.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy of George Will, here&#8217;s a new fallacy (one he doesn&#8217;t commit, by the way): U.S. policy toward Cuba should, however, be conditioned, and perhaps haunted, by U.S. policy toward China.
