I only vaguely do, but I remember thinking it was bonkers back then. \u00c2\u00a0 Well, taking off from that, I&#8217;ve been thinking of ways iron-manning can fall apart.\u00c2\u00a0 So, instead of making someone an IRON EAGLE, they show back up and turn themselves into an IRON TURKEY.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example. President Trump won&#8217;t accept someone reinterpreting what he&#8217;s saying so that it won&#8217;t sound crazy.\u00c2\u00a0 Take the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2017\/05\/12\/trump-refuses-to-commit-to-sean-spicer-when-pressed-by-fox-news\/\">Jeaninne Pirro interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Pirro:<\/strong> Are you moving so quickly that your communications department can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t keep up with you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Trump:<\/strong> Yes, it&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>P:<\/strong> So, what do we do about that, because &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>T:<\/strong> We don&#8217;t have press conferences. And we do &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>P:<\/strong> You don&#8217;t mean that!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>T:<\/strong> Well, we just don&#8217;t have &#8217;em &#8211; unless I have one every two weeks, and I do it myself.\u00c2\u00a0 We don&#8217;t have &#8217;em.\u00c2\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s a good idea. First of all, there&#8217;s a level of hostility that&#8217;s very unfair&#8230;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump also tweeted that it&#8217;s impossible for his surrogates to get everything right all the time, so it&#8217;s just better to opt out of having press conferences altogether.\u00c2\u00a0 Just have press releases.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"474\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy!&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/863002719400976384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>There are actually two issues with the argumentative context here.\u00c2\u00a0 The first is Trump&#8217;s false dilemma between (a) having totally error-free press conferences and (b) not having press conferences at all.\u00c2\u00a0 His reasoning is that because (a) is impossible, (b) must follow.\u00c2\u00a0 But, we know, that there are many other options. Another option could just be: (c) have press conferences, but have people who are properly briefed before them, vet the people you&#8217;ve got speaking on behalf of the administration for competence, and try to cultivate an amicable relationship with at least some of the media outlets and their reporters. You know, what responsible Presidents do.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, so that&#8217;s the familiar <em>perfectionist&#8217;s false dilemma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s what Trump does after someone tries to help him out in the midst of the argument that&#8217;s so interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 Pirro responds: <em>surely this must be just a rhetorical overstatement.<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nice way to say: <em>Look, I know it&#8217;s hard to get a detailed view out, so using a bit of reactionary language is useful.\u00c2\u00a0 But try the detailed view, now.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m listening.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>But, as it turns out, that&#8217;s all Trump&#8217;s got!\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like you try to iron man a guy, and he shows back up and says not only it&#8217;s not his view, but that it&#8217;s worse.\u00c2\u00a0 He wanted the fully on bonkers view!\u00c2\u00a0 So here&#8217;s folks trying to iron man him, and he turns it into an iron turkey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember the bonkers 80&#8217;s move, Iron Eagle?
