{"id":5224,"date":"2017-04-24T13:09:10","date_gmt":"2017-04-24T18:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=5224"},"modified":"2017-04-24T13:09:10","modified_gmt":"2017-04-24T18:09:10","slug":"simple-truths-and-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=5224","title":{"rendered":"Simple Truths and Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?attachment_id=5225\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5225 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/2017\/04\/kiss.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.3quarksdaily.com\/3quarksdaily\/2016\/01\/the-myth-of-simple-truths.html\">The Simple Truths Thesis<\/a> is that within some domain of inquiry or dispute, there is a set of truths that only the wicked, stupid, or mendacious would question or deny.\u00c2\u00a0 (<em>Philosophy15<\/em> video on it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xFWfDAbHYnM\">here<\/a>) Some domains of inquiry admit of simple truths, for sure.\u00c2\u00a0 But even in those domains, not all truths within them are so simple.\u00c2\u00a0 The core problem with the simple truths thesis is that there&#8217;s a difference between being <em>wrong<\/em> and being <em>irrational<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible to be rational and wrong, to make a mistake, to be led astray by some piece of evidence or a theory.\u00c2\u00a0 And to have one&#8217;s defaults set on interpreting those with whom one disagrees as being on the wrong side of a simple truth is to set oneself up for being deaf to all criticism.<\/p>\n<p>A perfect recent instance of Simple Truths being wielded to defend against criticism is by President Donald Trump in his AP interview over the weekend.\u00c2\u00a0 Transcript <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/c810d7de280a47e88848b0ac74690c83\">here<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 When asked about criticism he&#8217;s received over whether he&#8217;s not kept his campaign promise to label China a currency manipulator, Trump replies that they&#8217;ve, since he&#8217;s taken office, not been so bad.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, and he can&#8217;t call them out on it if he&#8217;s also hoping to get help from them on North Korea.\u00c2\u00a0 But what does he think of the criticism?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">And the media, some of them get it, in all fairness.
