Depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/824228768227217408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>And he later told congressional leadership that the number was between<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2017\/01\/23\/at-white-house-trump-tells-congressional-leaders-3-5-million-illegal-ballots-cost-him-the-popular-vote\/?utm_term=.f7b554f1a2f3\"> 3 and 5 million<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s how he explained losing the popular vote.<\/p>\n<p>In his recent <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4710456\/donald-trump-time-interview-truth-falsehood\/\">Time interview with Michael Sherer<\/a>, Trump clarifies the claim:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"column small-12 medium-10 medium-offset-1 large-offset-2  text size-1x-large line-height-large _10M0Ygc4\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Well now if you take a look at the votes, when I say that, I mean mostly they register wrong, in other words, for the votes, they register incorrectly, and\/or illegally. And they then vote. You have tremendous numbers of people. In fact I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m forming a committee on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"column small-12 medium-10 medium-offset-1 large-offset-2  text size-1x-large line-height-large _10M0Ygc4\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>But there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no evidence that 3 million people voted with\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"column small-12 medium-10 medium-offset-1 large-offset-2  text size-1x-large line-height-large _10M0Ygc4\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\">We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll see after the committee. I have people say it was more than that. We will see after we have. But there will be, we are forming a committee. And we are going to do a study on it, a very serious problem.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But this is, first, different from the claim that 3 million &#8216;illegals&#8217; voted &#8212; there&#8217;s a difference between illegals voting and illegal votes, right?\u00c2\u00a0 Second, this is another instance of the iron-manning of a spitball by turning it from an <em>assertion<\/em> to a <em>query<\/em> about something really important.\u00c2\u00a0 If Trump is right, then it&#8217;s something that should be reformed.\u00c2\u00a0 And perhaps we should investigate how widely it is the case that there is voter fraud of all the kinds he alleges.\u00c2\u00a0 But there&#8217;s a difference between claiming that it&#8217;s happening and holding that we should find out whether it is happening.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have evidence for it at the time of the speech act, the claiming is wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s of course, what the iron-manning afterwards does &#8212; you get the benefit of claiming but without having to defend the claim.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One more example of a spitball getting ironmanned when challenged.\u00c2\u00a0 Trump tweeted that millions of undocumented immigrants voted in the 2016 election.
