JOHN HEILEMANN (HOST): Let’s just say this first of all,\u00c2\u00a0when Trump does what he did in\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>that Tapper interview, and he did it over and over again, he kept calling\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Curiel a Mexican, right? It is not even dog whistle politics.\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>It is just pure racial politics.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

MARK HALPERIN (HOST): No, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not racial.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

HEILEMANN: It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s racial politics. It is.<\/span><\/p>\n

HALPERIN: Mexico isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a race<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

HEILEMANN: It doesn’t matter whether Mexico\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>is a race, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stirring up racial animus about people who don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like Hispanics, and illegal immigrants coming across the border. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s doing. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ringing the bell for them every time he does it. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not Mexican. He was born in Indiana. And eventually you can get Trump to\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>acknowledge that he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mexican-American, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s his heritage that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s doing here right? Then on top of that he\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>is a potential president of the\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>United States who has issued, over the course of the last week, vague threats, saying that the\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>judge should be investigated.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>It is wildly inappropriate and\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>yes, of course there are no political\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>benefits to this and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure that his team is beating it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s head against tables as they watch him blow news cycles behaving in this way that is again, I think racially tinged and also really wildly inappropriate things to say about a federal judge by someone who could be president of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

HALPERIN: It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s certainly racially tinged. I just want to make the point that Mexico is not \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Mexican is not a race.\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

HEILEMANN: \u00c2\u00a0I am fully aware that Mexico is not a\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>race, but you can invoke things\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>like that to stir up racial animus regardless of whether or not Mexico is a race or not.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s no defense, by the way, of Trump that “Mexico is not a race.” I think it’s sufficient for one to be a racist, or racist-like, if they treat non-races, like Mexico, as if they were races. \u00c2\u00a0These are going to be interesting times, unfortunately.<\/p>\n
