{"id":4826,"date":"2015-03-19T08:23:06","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T13:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4826"},"modified":"2015-03-19T08:23:06","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T13:23:06","slug":"it-builds-character","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4826","title":{"rendered":"It builds character"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/black-face.com\/images\/minstrel-show-christy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"209\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minstrels, singing an early version of &#8220;everything is awesome.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I knew an alleged philosopher once who held some variation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/evil\/\">soul-making theodicy <\/a>(suffering makes us group up morally, etc.). \u00c2\u00a0I say, &#8220;alleged,&#8221; because, although he taught in a philosophy department, he didn&#8217;t know what a theodicy was, and that his stunningly original thesis was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/im14andthisisdeep\/\">a 14-year-old&#8217;s variation of it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now comes this genius in the Wall Street Journal, to &#8220;just say&#8221; that blacks did better under Jim Crow (with all of its lynching and racial violence). \u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/jason-riley-race-lynching-whites\">Talking Points Memo<\/a> reports (sorry about the indirectness, but I don&#8217;t have a subscription to the WSJ):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;History shows that faster black progress was occurring at a time when whites were still lynching blacks, not merely singing about it,&#8221; Riley wrote, referring to a recent incident in which <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/university-of-oklahoma-severs-ties-racist-frat\">several white University of Oklahoma fraternity students were recorded on video singing a racist chant<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0about lynching.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Liberals want blacks to ignore the lessons of this pre-Civil Rights era, which threaten the current relevance of groups like the NAACP and <strong>call into question the Democratic Party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s belief that there is a federal solution to every black problem<\/strong>,&#8221; Riley wrote<\/p>\n<p>He went on to blame the problems of &#8220;black America&#8221; on &#8220;post-Civil Rights era social pathology and misguided government interventions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The problem isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the attitudes and behaviors of the boys on the bus so much as those of the boys in the \u00e2\u20ac\u2122hood,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure, by the way, that the &#8220;federal solution&#8221; claim does not represent the view of the NAACP and the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>The more important claim is that a campaign of racial terror is an inspiration toward racial progress. \u00c2\u00a0Some would define the &#8220;progress&#8221; in question as &#8220;eliminating the racial terror.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0So, yes, I guess it is an inspiration for that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I knew an alleged philosopher once who held some variation of the soul-making theodicy (suffering makes us group up morally, etc.). \u00c2\u00a0I say, &#8220;alleged,&#8221; because, although he taught in a philosophy department, he didn&#8217;t know what a theodicy was, and that his stunningly original thesis was a 14-year-old&#8217;s variation of it.
