This finding helps us understand why my colleagues and I have found that factual and scientific evidence is often ineffective at reducing misperceptions and can even backfire on issues like\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"color: #326891;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unc.edu\/~fbaum\/teaching\/articles\/PolBehavior-2010-Nyhan.pdf\">weapons of mass destruction,<\/a><a style=\"color: #326891;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2013\/01\/09\/why-talk-of-non-existent-obamacare-death-panels-wont-die\/\">health care reform<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"color: #326891;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/09\/upshot\/vaccine-opponents-can-be-immune-to-education.html\">vaccines<\/a>. With science as with politics, identity often trumps the facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"color: #333333;\" data-para-count=\"438\" data-total-count=\"2675\">So what should we do? One implication of Mr. Kahan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s study and other research in this field is that we need to try to break the association between identity and factual beliefs on high-profile issues \u00e2\u20ac\u201c for instance, by making clear that you can believe in human-induced climate change and still be a conservative Republican like former Representative\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"color: #326891;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/radio-archives\/episode\/495\/hot-in-my-backyard?act=2#play\">Bob Inglis<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0or an evangelical Christian like the climate scientist\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"color: #326891;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/environment\/2014\/05\/inquiring-minds-katharine-hayhoe-faith-climate\">Katharine Hayhoe.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"color: #333333;\" data-para-count=\"438\" data-total-count=\"2675\">&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"color: #333333;\" data-para-count=\"438\" data-total-count=\"2675\">The deeper problem is that citizens participate in public life precisely because they believe the issues at stake relate to their values and ideals, especially when political parties and other identity-based groups get involved \u00e2\u20ac\u201c an outcome that is inevitable on high-profile issues.
