{"id":4733,"date":"2014-06-27T10:02:52","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T15:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4733"},"modified":"2014-06-27T10:02:52","modified_gmt":"2014-06-27T15:02:52","slug":"paging-doctor-analogy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4733","title":{"rendered":"Paging Doctor Analogy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps there&#8217;s an academic paper in what we might call the &#8220;Doctor Analogy of Epistemic Competence.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0The basic thought is to treat any epistemic claim as if it were a claim made by your medical doctor. \u00c2\u00a0You undeniably have a personal interest in the accuracy and competence of such claims, so a history of failure or incompetence in this regard is relevant to you. \u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/06\/27\/iraq-war-critics-tv-bookers_n_5534549.html\">Here&#8217;s an example<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The analogy I&#8217;d draw is the following: You go to a doctor, who diagnoses an ailment and prescribes drugs and surgery,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Landay said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The diagnosis, however, turns out to be disastrously wrong and as a result, the drugs and surgery leave you crippled for years to come. <strong>Are you going to go back to that same doctor to diagnose your next illness?<\/strong> No, you aren&#8217;t. In fact, you probably sued him\/her for malpractice after the first go-round. Unfortunately, we can&#8217;t sue Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rice, Feith and the others for malpractice.
