{"id":4518,"date":"2013-10-30T10:21:10","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T15:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4518"},"modified":"2013-10-30T10:34:18","modified_gmt":"2013-10-30T15:34:18","slug":"4518","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4518","title":{"rendered":"Joy of Man&#8217;s Desiring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/weknowawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/thanks-jesus-food-de-nada-550x647.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"647\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By now everyone is familiar with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/print\/156341\">the Roman Pope&#8217;s attempts<\/a> to change the direction of Catholic moral outrage from people&#8217;s underpants to more global problems, such as poverty, war, and the like.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re still going to care, mind you, about abortion and gay marriage, they&#8217;re just not supposed to talk about that to the exclusion of every other notion.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago&#8217;s local pontiff, Cardinal Francis George, has not gotten the memo. \u00c2\u00a0Several days ago, he issued an order defunding several immigration rights organizations that supported gay marriage. \u00c2\u00a0Some background (from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/breaking\/chi-groups-lose-nearly-300000-from-catholic-charity-over-gay-marriage-issue-20131018,0,2885623.story\">Chicago Tribune<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When a statewide immigrant-rights coalition endorsed same-sex marriage this past spring, 11 groups were given a stark choice by a Roman Catholic anti-poverty program: Leave the coalition, or lose their Catholic funding.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of the groups decided to stick with the Illinois Coalition for Immigration and Refugee Rights. Another group broke with both. All told, the nine groups gave up grants totaling nearly $300,000 from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. This week, some began scaling back projects that address domestic violence, affordable housing and immigration rights.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In what can only be described as an hilariously puzzling choice of words, the Cardinal argued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Jesus is merciful, but he is not stupid,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d George said in a letter defending the Campaign\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision not to fund members of the coalition. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<strong>He knows the difference between right and wrong<\/strong>. Manipulating both immigrants and the Church for political advantage is wrong.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This suggests that Jesus merely <strong>knows<\/strong> the difference between right and wrong&#8211;He doesn&#8217;t have any special access (<a href=\"http:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/metaethics\/#EutPro\">Euthyphro problem solved<\/a>) or relationship to the answer.
