{"id":4023,"date":"2013-02-25T20:40:31","date_gmt":"2013-02-26T01:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4023"},"modified":"2013-02-25T21:05:44","modified_gmt":"2013-02-26T02:05:44","slug":"something-of-a-hyperbolic-flourish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4023","title":{"rendered":"Something of a hyperbolic flourish"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 652px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/assets_c\/2013\/02\/mccarthy-cruz-cropped-proto-custom_28.jpg\" width=\"652\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joe McCarthy and Ted Cruz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ted Cruz, a newly-minted Senator out of Texas, has achieved some recent notoriety for his affinities with Joe McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what Cruz had to say three years ago on the Harvard Law Faculty (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/comment\/2013\/02\/ted-cruz-sees-red-not-crimson-at-harvard.html\">from Jane Mayer at the New Yorker<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cruz greeted the audience jovially, but soon launched an impassioned attack on President Obama, whom he described as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the most radical\u00e2\u20ac\u009d President \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ever to occupy the Oval Office.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (I was covering the conference and kept the notes.)<\/p>\n<p>He then went on to assert that Obama, who attended Harvard Law School four years ahead of him, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153would have made a perfect president of Harvard Law School.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The reason, said Cruz, was that, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<strong>There were fewer declared Republicans in the faculty when we were there than Communists! There was one Republican. But there were twelve who would say they were Marxists who believed in the Communists overthrowing the United States government<\/strong>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That is a pretty straightforward claim.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how the Cruz camp <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/archives\/2013\/02\/cruz_defends_government_overthrow_lie.php\">replied<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Cruz spokesperson defended the Senator\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s claim. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s curious that the New Yorker would dredge up a three-year-old speech and call it \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnews,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Catherine Frazier told TheBlaze late Friday. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Regardless, Senator Cruz\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s substantive point was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/2013\/02\/23\/ted-cruz-responds-to-new-mccarthy-new-yorker-article-curious-they-would-dredge-up-a-3-year-old-speech-call-it-news\/\">absolutely correct<\/a>: in the mid-1990s, the Harvard Law School faculty included numerous self-described proponents of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccritical legal studies\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a school of thought <strong>explicitly derived from<\/strong> Marxism \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and they far outnumbered Republicans.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;His substantive point&#8221; was that there were <strong>twelve<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0communists bent on overthrowing the US government.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0For more hilarity, here&#8217;s some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redstate.com\/2013\/02\/25\/jane-mayers-mccarthyist-attack-on-ted-cruz\/\">Harvard\u00c2\u00a0Law School Grad\u00c2\u00a0defending\u00c2\u00a0Cruz<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now, <strong>it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s something of a hyperbolic flourish<\/strong> to describe armchair radicals of this sort as people \u00e2\u20ac\u0153who believed in the Communists overthrowing the United States government.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You don&#8217;t say.\u00c2\u00a0 And this is why we can&#8217;t have nice things.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ted Cruz, a newly-minted Senator out of Texas, has achieved some recent notoriety for his affinities with Joe McCarthy.
