We’ve had discussions of the use of persuasive comparison with the Ad Hitlerum and Godwin’s Law here at the NS a few times.\u00c2\u00a0 (Just a sample from John HERE<\/a> and from me HERE<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 Here’s a stealthier version (hence, sneakyGodwin<\/em>), one that uses invocations of the Holocaust to make the analogy.\u00c2\u00a0 Representative Virginia Foxx (R-NC) invoked<\/a> Martin Niem\u00c3\u00b6ller’s famous line about the temptations of ignoring Nazi oppression:<\/p>\n

First they came for the Communists
\nAnd I did not speak out
\nBecause I was not a Communist…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Foxx, as reported by IHE<\/a>, in defending for-profit colleges from govermental regulation:<\/p>\n

” ‘They came for the for-profits, and I didn’t speak up…’ ” Foxx said. “Nobody really spoke up like they should have.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The trouble, as with all the Godwins, is that government regulation of an industry isn’t akin to sending people to the camps.\u00c2\u00a0 The objective of the regulation is to keep people from amassing debilitating debt to these colleges.
