{"id":4002,"date":"2013-02-07T00:09:53","date_gmt":"2013-02-07T05:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4002"},"modified":"2013-02-07T00:17:58","modified_gmt":"2013-02-07T05:17:58","slug":"sneakygodwin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=4002","title":{"rendered":"sneakyGodwin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve had discussions of the use of persuasive comparison with the Ad Hitlerum and Godwin&#8217;s Law here at the NS a few times.\u00c2\u00a0 (Just a sample from John <a href=\"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=3927\">HERE<\/a> and from me <a href=\"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=2114\">HERE<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a stealthier version (hence, <em>sneakyGodwin<\/em>), one that uses invocations of the Holocaust to make the analogy.\u00c2\u00a0 Representative Virginia Foxx (R-NC) <a href=\"http:\/\/campusprogress.org\/articles\/rep._virgina_foxx_alludes_to_holocaust_in_condemnation_of_obamas_rules\/\">invoked<\/a> Martin Niem\u00c3\u00b6ller&#8217;s famous line about the temptations of ignoring Nazi oppression:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>First they came for the Communists<br \/>\nAnd I did not speak out<br \/>\nBecause I was not a Communist&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Foxx, as reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2013\/02\/06\/foxx-criticizes-private-college-leaders-not-defending-profit-colleges\">IHE<\/a>, in defending for-profit colleges from govermental regulation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221; &#8216;They came for the for-profits, and I didn&#8217;t speak up&#8230;&#8217; &#8221; Foxx said. &#8220;Nobody really spoke up like they should have.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The trouble, as with all the Godwins, is that government regulation of an industry isn&#8217;t akin to sending people to the camps.\u00c2\u00a0 The objective of the regulation is to keep people from amassing debilitating debt to these colleges.
