{"id":3137,"date":"2011-08-30T21:25:32","date_gmt":"2011-08-31T02:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=3137"},"modified":"2011-08-30T21:25:32","modified_gmt":"2011-08-31T02:25:32","slug":"ad-populum-seals-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=3137","title":{"rendered":"Ad populum seals it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A good deal has been made about Rick Perry&#039;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/08\/20\/rick-perry-evolution-intelligent-design_n_932073.html\">doubts about evolution<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/08\/17\/rick-perry-global-warming_n_929235.html\">global warming<\/a>.&nbsp; And so the concern that we have yet another know-nothing Republican on our hands is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/rick_perry\/index.html?story=\/politics\/war_room\/2011\/08\/29\/rick_perry_dumb\">pretty popular<\/a> (though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2302661\/\">Hitchens has an interesting take<\/a>, too, namely, that he&#039;s cynically just putting on).&nbsp; Rich Lowry, over at National Review, has seen this game before, and he warns his readers that this is an old familiar canard, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/articles\/275818\/anti-science-smear-rich-lowry\">&quot;Anti-Science Smear&quot;<\/a> on Republicans.&nbsp; Here&#039;s how he responds to the evolution line:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>According to Gallup, 40 percent of Americans think God created man in his present form, and 38 percent think man developed over millions of years with God guiding the process. <strong>Is three-quarters of the country potentially anti-science?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Seriously. That&#039;s the response about evolution.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The trouble is that I am unsure that those three quarters polled by Gallup that day could answer many detailed questions about evolution.&nbsp; They may not be <em>anti-science<\/em>, but they aren&#039;t <em>science literate,<\/em> at least most of them.&nbsp; That&#039;s probably the case about many, many things. (I&#039;d love to see if Gallup could produce a&nbsp; percentage of people who think that there&#039;s a highest number.)
