{"id":1838,"date":"2010-03-13T09:58:15","date_gmt":"2010-03-13T14:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=1838"},"modified":"2010-03-13T09:58:15","modified_gmt":"2010-03-13T14:58:15","slug":"cornell-ever-heard-of-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=1838","title":{"rendered":"Cornell, ever heard of it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thankfully Cornell University&#39;s very excellent philosophy program is off the hook for <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/opinions\/2010\/03\/10\/2010-03-10_can_the_smoker_in_chief_really_lead_america_in_health_care_reform.html\">the following travesty<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"TixyyLink\">\n<p>As I approach my 10-year college reunion, it&#39;s clear that I missed a few classes that would have proved helpful.<\/p>\n<p>Those classes include &quot;Leadership and Ethics&quot; and &quot;Ethical Theory,&quot; offered by the Program on Ethics and Public Life at my alma mater, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Cornell+University\" title=\"Cornell University\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">Cornell University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See, I&#39;m certain that at some point those classes would have covered the issue I&#39;ve been grappling with recently, in which case I&#39;d be able to tell you what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Plato\" title=\"Plato\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">Plato<\/a> and Aristotle said about it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Maimonides\" title=\"Maimonides\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">Maimonides<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Thomas+Aquinas\" title=\"Thomas Aquinas\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">Thomas Aquinas<\/a>, too. I bet you Hobbes and Locke have really super advice on this one. And you just know <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Ayn+Rand\" title=\"Ayn Rand\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">Ayn Rand<\/a> would be all over it.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, I chose to commune with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Teenage+Mutant+Ninja+Turtles\" title=\"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles<\/a> of the art history department instead &#8211; Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. So to sort through my philosophical conundrum, I will enlist your help.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Barack+Obama\" title=\"Barack Obama\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">President Obama<\/a> making his final push for health care reform,<strong> I ask you to consider the following &quot;If, Then&quot; theorem: If our health is the President&#39;s business, then the President&#39;s health should be our business<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What follows is a series of ad hominem tu quoques.&nbsp; For instance:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"TixyyLink\">\n<p>* The President&#39;s push for health care is disingenuous.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2009, he called the sweeping tobacco legislation that he passed &quot;a victory for health care reform&quot; and &quot;a step that will save lives and dollars.&quot; Whether Obama&#39;s main interest in passing health care reform in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/United+States\" title=\"United States\" ywaonclickoverride=\"true\">America<\/a> is to save lives or save dollars &#8211; and it has been both over the past year &#8211; <strong>one could argue that a President who smokes isn&#39;t really doing much of either<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One <strong>could<\/strong> argue that, but one would be wrong.&nbsp; Perhaps she should have taken a logic class as well.<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of the guys at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sadlyno.com\/archives\/29122.html\">Sadly, No!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thankfully Cornell University&#39;s very excellent philosophy program is off the hook for the following travesty: As I approach my 10-year college reunion, it&#39;s clear that I missed a few classes that would have proved helpful.
