{"id":1449,"date":"2009-05-07T06:01:45","date_gmt":"2009-05-07T12:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2009-05-07T06:01:45","modified_gmt":"2009-05-07T12:01:45","slug":"write-trash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenonsequitur.com\/?p=1449","title":{"rendered":"Write trash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#39;s hard to have a conversation when some people don&#39;t follow the rules.&nbsp; If your conversation is about, say, which things ought a rational person assent to, then indeed there are certain rules.&nbsp; One can disagree about these rules, but the rules say you have to state the grounds for the disagreement and those grounds have to be good grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#39;s one rule.&nbsp; If you offer up a point of view in a public forum, you should expect criticism.&nbsp; Some of this is probably going to be dumb and uninformed, some of it relevant.&nbsp; There&#39;s a rule that says you have to focus on the relevant criticism.&nbsp; Pretending that the only criticism you get is of the former variety breaks a rule.&nbsp; Here&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=aWVgBVC0L05w\">Amity Shlaes<\/a>, a kind of conservative author, talking about George Will:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So <a href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Michele+Bachmann&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Michele Bachmann<\/a>&rsquo;s version of history is &ldquo;<a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2009\/04\/historian-michele-bachmann-blames-fdrs-hoot-smalley-tariffs-for-great-depression.php\" target=\"_blank\">from another planet<\/a>.&rdquo; <a href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Bobby+Jindal&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Bobby Jindal<\/a>, the Republican governor of Louisiana, is &ldquo;<a href=\"http:\/\/allisonkilkenny.wordpress.com\/2009\/02\/28\/video-bobby-jindal-chronically-stupid\/\" target=\"_blank\">chronically stupid<\/a>.&rdquo; And <a href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Eric%0ACantor&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Eric Cantor<\/a> of Virginia, the second-ranking Republican in the House, is &ldquo;<a href=\"http:\/\/yglesias.thinkprogress.org\/archives\/2009\/04\/eric-cantor-bashes-tries-to-take-credit-for-high-speed-rail.php\" target=\"_blank\">busy lying constantly<\/a>.&rdquo;             <\/p>\n<p>That at least is according to posts on three left-leaning blogs.     <\/p>\n<p><strong>Writers who are not pro-<a href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Barack+Obama&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Barack Obama<\/a> are suffering character assassination as well. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/linkset\/2005\/03\/24\/LI2005032402294.html\" target=\"_blank\">George Will<\/a> of the Washington Post, the nation&rsquo;s senior conservative columnist, has been so assaulted by bloggers that his editor, <a href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Fred+Hiatt&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Fred Hiatt<\/a>, recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/discussion\/2009\/04\/27\/DI2009042702249.html?hpid=opinionsbox1\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, &ldquo;I would think folks would be eager to engage in the debate, given how sure they are of their case, rather than trying to shut him down.&rdquo;     <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The disconcerting thing isn&rsquo;t that the bloggers or their guests did this slamming. We&rsquo;re used to such vitriol in campaign time. What is surprising is that <strong>the attacks<\/strong> are continuing after an election.     <\/p>\n<p>In the past, politicians and policy thinkers tended to be magnanimous in victory.
