    Maybe a brief meta discussion of the article and it's approach would have helped allay some of the comments that followed. Half seemed to think you were describing the democratic process as a properly argumentative one; the other half that civility on the part of politicians alone would be sufficient for a healthy democracy. 

    No doubt the civility prescription is asking a lot, but I think you mean only to clarify the demands of functional democracy, not comment on their immediate practicality for any single party to it.
